ProsThe Mitsubishi EVO MR powered by a 4g63 powerplant and MIVEC variable valve timing delivers 286 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque straight from the factory. Using a TD05HR-16G6C-10.5T, the EVO has increased its boost response by nearly five percent over the previous models with various upgrades including an updated compressor housing. With the newly established engine updates, we find the EVO MR has increased its power output by 10 hp and 3 lb-ft of torque.
ConsEVO owners have been known to drive their cars on the ragged edge as if their lives counted on it. For this reason, Mitsubishi and their team of engineers have gone to great lengths in detuning this rocket ship for the average consumers to enjoy on the street. Along with its detuning came the necessity to richen up the A/F ratio to ensure an added safety margin for those with a heavy right foot, not to mention added security when it comes to warranty issues. If safety and engine longevity are the main priorities for the 4g63 engine, then the EVO is a rock solid car, but for the enthusiasts, a safe A/F ratio and pig rich A/F condition often leads to a decrease in horsepower.
NotesPrior to any testing on the EVO MR, we commenced a tune-up, addressing some of the basic components such as spark plugs and oil, before rolling the dyno and recording our baseline numbers.

ProsXS Engineering located in Garden Grove, Calif., provides a reflash of the factory ECU at an affordable price with outstanding results. Using a custom XS Engineering software program, they are able to access all ECU parameters to maximize horsepower potential without the need of spending thousands of dollars on an aftermarket ECU or the aid of often-questionable piggyback systems sold on the market today. Using a program specifically for the EVO that uses a cat-back exhaust system and electronic boost controller, the reflash program retains all factory sensors, which play a crucial role in the proper operation of the vehicle. Should the engine overheat or a sensor fail, the factory ECU can safeguard against damage where as most piggyback systems don't have the ability to detect problems when in boost, ending your day with a blown engine
ConsFuel compensation, ignition timing, cam angle and air flow scaling are just a few parameters that can be custom tailored with the reflash program to increase your engines performance. Unfortunately for most owners, the reflash process isn't simply dropping your ECU in your mailbox and having it returned in a three-day process. XS Engineering recommends bringing in the vehicle to their facility to reflash and tune on their dyno to extract your maximum horsepower potential from your EVO-when it comes to making safe and reliable horsepower, there's no such thing as educated guesses.
