Dyno 1: Baseline
2007 Scion TC
PEAKHP 149.7 / PEAKTQ 154.0
Pros
What's not to love about the Scion tC? Take into consideration that the vehicle's equipped with a slew of amenities, along with a reasonable sticker price. One-touch power windows, cruise control, keyless entry, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and a 160-watt Pioneer sound system are among many of the reasons why the tC has been one of the most popular sub-compact vehicles in the U.S. for three years running. While interior styling has received miscellaneous upgrades for the 2007 model, the stout 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine remains the same, along with its renowned Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). ppscion-02.jpg
Cons
The combination of the tC's 2.4-liter setup and naturally aspirated engine proved to be effective through the low and midrange powerband, but quickly fell on its face when approaching the 5500rpm to redline range. Using some of the newer products available for the Scion tC, we were determined to sprout some chest hair on our tC and prove that this was more than your average commuter car.
Notes
We received the vehicle with only 300 miles on the odometer and that wonderful new car smell. Before the vehicle was strapped to the dyno and our power page testing was to commence, the tc's engine was properly broken in as a precautionary step in achieving accurate baseline numbers.
Dyno 2: Fujita F5 Cold Air IntakePEAKHP 155.1 / PEAKTQ 156.5
* Horsepower Gain
* 1500 to 3500 HP range: 0 to 3
* 3500 to 5500 HP range: 3 to 7
* 5500 to redline HP range: 7 to 8
* Torque Gain
* 1500 to 3500 TQ range: 0 to 3
* 3500 to 5500 TQ range: 3 to 6
* 5500 to redline TQ range: 7 to 5
Pros
Comprised of a 6061-T6 aluminum intake tube, the Fujita cold-air intake system for the Scion TC is comprised of two main inlet pipes, creating an easier installation process. Along with the high performance air filter, the built-in air horn creates a high velocity spiral motion as the air is sucked into the intake, thus reducing air turbulence and creating a more efficient passage for the cold air. We liked the fact that our Fujita intake system came complete with silicone hoses and T-Bolt clamps. What totally caught us off guard was the NOS energy drink that was enclosed in a zip lock bag. With close to 90 degrees of heat in the dyno facility, the drink came in handy during the times when I was ready to pass out from heat exhaustion.
Cons
While not much has changed in the 2007 Scion's engine compartment, we did notice a difference in the factory mass air flow (MAF) from previous models. The smaller MAF made previous model intakes that were made for the tC not compatible with the 2007 models. For those of you looking to trade intakes or purchasing them from a friend, make sure the intake is compatible with your vehicle.
